Amazon announced today the return of its meal donation program during Ramadan, reinforcing its commitment to the local community. The drive will donate 500,000 meals to less fortunate families throughout the holy month, while expanding its reach and impact to support and uplift orphaned children, in line with its vision to create a positive impact in the local communities.
Brought to life in partnership with the Egyptian Food Bank and ‘Share a Smile’ Foundation, the initiative reflects Amazon’s integral philosophy of being a force for good across its communities. Amazon employees will volunteer across this initiative, facilitating opportunities for them to create a positive, lasting impact. Amazon’s meal donation program will benefit thousands of people across Egypt, leveraging its extensive transportation and delivery networks to reach those in need and spread joy across the country.
Along with supporting families during the month of giving, Amazon will host an Iftar for orphaned children in Cairo to give back and create moments of happiness, emphasizing its commitment towards working with community organizations to improve the lives of underprivileged children through food security and education.
Omar Elsahy, Amazon Egypt’s General Manager, stated, “Ramadan is a special time for Amazon because it allows us to connect on an even more meaningful level with our local community and deliver meaningful impact beyond our daily operations. For the 3rd year in a row, we have secured strategic partnerships with the Egyptian Food Bank and ‘Share a Smile’ Foundation – both of which are doing outstanding work on the ground –to help those in need and create a chain of positive influence. This initiative closely aligns with Amazon’s commitment to food security and promotes a culture of volunteerism in our workplace.”
Mohsen Sarhan, CEO of the Egyptian Food Bank, added, “We believe in the power of collaboration to make a real difference in the lives of those facing hunger. Our long-standing partnership with Amazon is a great example of this, and their unwavering commitment to supporting food security efforts during Ramadan is deeply impactful. Together, we can ensure that families across Egypt are able to access the nutritious meals they need during this important holy month.”
Amazon’s culture of acting as a “force for good” continues to drive its dedication to improving the communities it operates in, expanding its community footprint by investing in its purposeful initiatives, which involves its employees and customers at scale. These initiatives maximize the power of collective action and collaboration to address local challenges, making a lasting difference in the lives of people in need across the region.
Nagwa Elassy, Founder of ‘Share a Smile’ Foundation, commented “We are proud to partner with Amazon Egypt yet again to provide food security for thousands of families across Egypt, by delivering Ramadan meals through Amazon’s meal donation program. We are genuinely impressed by the volunteering spirit and contributions of Amazon employees, who played an integral role in preparing the meals. Their unwavering dedication to community impact is a testament to their commitment towards creating a positive impact on the lives of thousands of individuals across the country.”
Nadine Abou El-Gheit, MEA Community Impact Lead, Amazon Egypt said, “Ramadan is the month of kindness and generosity, and a valuable reminder to do good by others. Amazon’s employees volunteering in the meal donation program reflects our company’s dedication to our community that extends beyond the holy month and allows us all to share in the joy and fulfillment of giving to others. As we extend our role at Amazon beyond our traditional activities, such initiatives strengthen our bonds with our wider community and allow us to contribute to the well-being of Egypt’s social fabric.”
Following its support to the recent upgrade of the Egyptian Food Bank’s factory, Amazon seeks to create impact-driven initiatives that reflect its spirit of innovation, determination, and passion while furthering its vision to strengthen food security in Egypt. Since last year, Amazon has contributed a total of 1.2 million meals, securing around 65,000 KGs of food to reach as many families as possible in the lead up to and during Ramadan.
Amazon strives to embed a culture of giving back by promoting volunteer work, a key component in the company’s global community impact’s priorities, which aims to alleviate the impossible choices faced by those experiencing hardships. This feeds into Amazon’s overarching community impact program to make a purposeful change in the world.
