Nestlé Egypt Partners with Shift EV to Electrify its Logistics Fleet

Nestlé, the world’s largest nutrition, health, and wellness company, in Egypt, announced an electrification agreement with Shift EV, an electric mobility start-up, to convert its logistics fleet to run on electric power using Shift EV’s innovative Electrofitting™ technology, in the first-ever full electrification program in the FMCG market in Africa and MENA.

By leveraging Shift EV’s Electrofitting™ technology, Nestlé will help reduce its carbon emissions by extending the life of depreciated fleet vehicles and converting to electric vehicles (EVs), while delivering operational savings.

This agreement comes at the successful conclusion of a pilot deployment of Shift EV’s technology in Nestlé’s operations in what is the first EV deployment in the FMCG industry in Egypt. The agreement lays out the path to electrify fleets with payload capacities between 0.5 and 4 tons, which are critical in sales and distribution activities. The pilot has been supported by Traxl which is another rising Egyptian start-up that is building a trucking platform to help businesses move their goods across Egypt efficiently and reliably while giving different stakeholders visibility across their supply chain.

“Leading the change towards a sustainable future, Nestlé is not only committed to reducing its carbon footprint to reach its Net Zero commitments by 2050 but also empowering local start-ups to drive innovation and create a positive impact on society,” said Tarek Kamel Chairman & CEO of Nestlé Egypt & Sudan. “By embracing cutting-edge technologies like Electrofitting™, Nestlé Egypt continues to set the benchmark for FMCGs as the first company in Egypt to make this move. Through these initiatives, Nestlé demonstrates its unwavering commitment to making a positive difference and protecting our planet for future generations.”

“Our mission is to enable global leaders like Nestlé to decarbonize their fleets without sacrificing reliability or cost – and that’s precisely what Electrofitting™ is designed for,” said Aly Eltayeb, Co-founder & CEO of Shift EV. “We are thrilled to partner with Nestlé to scale our deployments in the FMCG market and demonstrate the scalability and impact of our technology with a global sustainability leader like Nestlé”.

Nestlé and Shift EV’s electrification partnership marks an important milestone in the deployment of EVs through Electrofitting™ in emerging markets. Vehicles will be electrified in phases in 2023 and 2024 in Egypt, which will set the foundation for a regional expansion.
