The international conference of the Institute of National Planning under the title “Governance and Sustainable Development” will kick off next Saturday. The conference is organized by the Institute of National Planning in cooperation with the Economic Governance Project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. The conference will take place over two days, June 3-4, 2023 in Cairo.
The conference will discuss the role of governance in supporting sustainable development on three main axes: the economic axis, which mainly focuses on the impact of governance on economic growth rates and employment; the social axis, which reveals the positive impact of governance on poverty reduction and the effectiveness of various social protection programs; and the environmental axis, which addresses how to enhance the government’s response to climate change and various environmental challenges, which will have a positive impact on future generations.
During the conference, several sessions will be held, including a panel discussion on “The Role of Governance in Supporting Sustainable Development” chaired by Professor Dr. Khaled Zakaria Amin, Director of the Faculty of Economic Policy at the Institute of National Planning and Chairman of the Academic Committee of the Conference. There will also be a panel discussion on “Environmental Governance and Climate Change” chaired by Professor Dr. Hala Abu Ali, Deputy Director of the Institute of National Planning, with the participation of Her Excellency Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, Professor Dr. Mahmoud Mohy El-Din, Professor of Economics at Cairo University and Special Envoy of the United Nations for Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Prof. Khaled Fahmy, former Minister of Environment, and Dr. Ali Abu Senna, CEO of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency. Additionally, there will be a dialogue session on the role of governance in supporting the social dimension of sustainable development with the participation of Her Excellency Dr. Nevine El-Kabbag, Minister of Social Solidarity.
The international conference of the Institute of National Planning will be attended and participated in by Her Excellency Dr. Hala El-Said, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Prof. Ashraf El-Araby, President of the Institute of National Planning, Dr. Mohamed Salama, Director of the National Academy for Combating Corruption, Dr. Sherifa Fouad Sherif, Executive Director of the Governance and Sustainable Development Institute, and Dr. Salwa Tobbala, Senior Governance Advisor at the United States Agency for International Development, as well as a distinguished group of local and international professors and experts from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, the Institute of National Planning, the World Bank, and Egyptian universities and research centers.
